Application of Vilsmeier conditions to 4-hydroxy quinaldines gives 4-chloro-3-formyl-2-(2-hydroxyethene-1-yl)quinolines as an intermediate. The latter is utilized to prepare diazepino quinolines on treatment with phenylhydrazine hydrochloride. All the synthesized compounds have been screened for their antibacterial and antifungal as well as cytogenetic activities.
