A series of indole acetic acid derivatives has been prepared using 3-indole acetic acid as starting material. The acid hydrazide I was obtained by condensation of ethyl ester of indole acetic acid with hydrazine. By treating the acid hydrazide I with different aldehydes, the hydrazones IIa-d were produced. Also, some of acid anhydrides reacted with acid hydrazide I to afford the corresponding pyridazinone derivatives IIIa-d. Further, indole acetic acid was condensed with o- phenylenediamine or o-aminophenol yielding benzimidazole IV or benzoxazole V derivative, respectively. Spectroscopic data and elemental analyses substantiated the structure of the synthesized compounds. Some of the prepared compounds were found to possess antimicrobial activity.
