A series of Mannich bases with chloro- and nitro-substituted benzamide have been synthesized by the Mannich reaction of substituted chlorobenzamide with various sulphonamides and secondary amines. Elemental analysis and spectral data (UV, IR and 1H NMR) were used for their characterization. Screening against various pathogenic Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria pointed to significant antimicrobial behaviour of the newly synthesized Mannich bases with the nitro substituted phenylene system and sulphonamide moiety. All the compounds were found to be of low toxicity.
